As part of the arrangements, UMG will deliver 45 thousand tonnes or more of slag from the ash-disposal areas of DTEK TPPs to Sibelco's business unit in the Netherlands. Slag is used as an abrasive for the sandblast cleaning of sea ship bottoms and is used as a safe alternative to sand, as constant contact with it does not lead to lung conditions in workers.
To enhance product quality, UMG commissioned special equipment for slag flushing. This leads to a cleaner raw material with a market value almost double in comparison to slag with high ash content.
"The export of Ukrainian slag is an unprecedented event. Every year, Ukrainian TPPs accumulate up to 8 million tons of ash and slag material, 90% of which is deposited in ash-disposal areas. This is why we are interested in expanding the market for the waste products of thermal energy generation. Cooperation with companies like Sibelco allows to use ash and slag materials for commercial purposes." Sergey Melnichenko, Sales Director at UMG, stated.
UMG began its processing and sale of ash and slag materials (ash, slag, ash slag, microsphere) back in 2013. A year later, the company commissioned one of the most modern plants for the production and processing of microsphere, which is the ash and slag material with the highest margin. Investments in the plant's construction in Druzhkivka totaled 1.2 million dollars. In 2015 the sales volume of ash and slag materials reached 348.2 thousand tons, and sales revenue hit 5 million dollars. In addition, 31.5 thousand tons of ash and slag materials were sold to clients in export markets.
The use of ash and slag waste for commercial purposes has an eco-friendly effect. Currently, ash disposal areas in Ukrainian TPPs are 50% full, and sometimes this number reaches 95%. The reprocessing of ash and slag materials helps decrease the negative effect of existing ash-disposal areas on the environment by reducing their storage volumes. As a result, the demand for allocating new land plots for coal waste storage also declines.
UMG operates in six major areas: clay extraction, limestone and dolomite extraction, processing and sale of TPP by-products, rare and technical gases, trading of mineral fertilizers and grain. The company was established in 2006 by SCM Group. The holding employs around four thousand people, and its products are supplied to 30 different countries.
